Maharam Fellowship

In 2020 I received the Maharam Fellowship, to work in Salt Lake City with the non-profit Wasatch Community Gardens, connecting my artistic background to my interest in permaculture. My fellowship primarily took place at the The Green Phoenix Farm location, which is centered around a job training program for women experiencing homelessness. My role was balanced between directing the artistic aspects of the fellowship, and taking on a learning role in the gardens alongside the women in the job training program.

I saw the shipping containers that the farm had repurposed into buildings, as an opportunity. On the shipping containers I created murals to reflect the personality and brightness of the community at the urban farm. I also facilitated a collaborative art project in which women in the job training program participated in an ongoing mural together.

The fellowship came to an end with the creation of a filmed tour of the gardens, including testimonials from participants in the job training program. My time with Wasatch Community Gardens was unfortunately during the COVID-19 pandemic, but we used this as an opportunity to document the space and community digitally, so that potential visitors could still engage during a time of limited in person interaction.
